Indian Railways allows Transfer of Railway Ticket

Passengers with confirmed tickets can now transfer their tickets to someone else. Though the current reservation terms state that the customers cannot transfer a berth or seat reserved in the name of the respective person to another person; some modifications to the rules have been announced. The railways said that the change in the name of the passenger holding the ticket will be granted only once.

The first exception to the rules is for Government servants. They will be allowed to transfer tickets to others, provided a written application is provided. “Where the passenger is a Government Servant, proceeding on duty and appropriate authority, makes a request in writing 24 hours before the scheduled departure of train,” the railways said.

The second exception to the rule allows the transfer of a reserved ticket to another member of the family. “Where the passenger makes a request in writing 24 hours before the scheduled departure of the train that the reservation made in his name may be transferred to another member of his family, meaning, Father, Mother, Brother, Sister, Son, Daughter, Husband or Wife,” the notice added.

The third exception to the rule allows students to transfer a ticket to another student of the same educational institute. “Where the passengers are students of a recognized educational institution and the Head of the institution makes a request in writing 48 hours before the scheduled departure of the train, that the reservation made in the name of any student be transferred to any other student of the same institute,” the railways added.

A fourth exception allows transfer of ticket between passengers traveling together on account of a marriage event. “Where the passengers are members of a marriage party and any person deemed to be Head of such party makes a request in writing 48 hours before the scheduled departure of the train that the reservation made in the name of any member of the marriage party be transferred to any other person,” the notice said.

Lastly, the National Cadet Corps passengers will also be allowed to transfer ticket reservations. “Where the passengers are a group of cadets of National Cadet Corps and any officer who is the head of the group, makes a request in writing at least 24 hours before the departure of the train that the reservation made in the name of any cadet be transferred to any other cadet,” the notice added.

The railways would provide a change in the name of tickets at the request of students, marriage party group or the National Cadet Corps only if the tickets do not exceed 10% of the total group strength.
