Indian Railway Safety Week - Cross Safely!

2nd June 2017 will be celebrated as the International Level Crossing Awareness Day. The Vadodara railway division of Western Railways are celebrating an entire week from the 29th of May to the 2nd of June 2017 as International Level Crossing Awareness Week.

This year’s safety motto is “to encourage level crossing in a safe and cautious manner”. According to Railway officials 33% incidents of injuries, 40% accidents and 66% deaths take place at level crossings.

Vadodara railway division has 1,044 level crossings of which 428 are manned and 616 are unmanned. Fortunately, throughout the year the crossings in the division have not witnessed any accidents, officials said. To make sure the stats are a minimum and to prevent accidents at unmanned crossings, railways has decided to transform every unmanned crossing into either a road under bridge or road over bridge by 2020.

Crossing closed barrier or gate at level crossings is a punishable offence under section 131 of the Motor Vehicle Act 1988 and under Railway Act 161.

From Monday, the division will urge commuters to pay more attention to safety rules. 17 teams of railway officers, inspectors and employees will visit level crossings and distribute leaflets, handbills and urge commuters to follow road signs and safety instructions. In gram panchayats near level crossings, street plays and short films will also be used.
